Open Health IT > VistA EHR
VistA EHR is open source Electronic Health Record (EHR) software originally developed by the US Veterans Administration for use in VA hospitals. VistA is used by hundreds of VA hospitals and outpatient facilities, as well as a fair share of private hospitals across the United States. Read the Time Magazine article from 1996 proclaiming the VA as the “Best in Health Care“, and acknowledging VistA EHR as the key to its success. The US Government made VistA free for your Hospital or Ambulatory health practice to use, why use any other?
The VistA EHR server can be run in-house or on Amazon eC2.
VistA is a proven , robust system and unlike other systems, which require expensive yearly upgrades, VistA is developed by the VA and thousands of independent developers for free. The source code is open source and is placed in the public domain by the Center for Medicare Services (CMS) and the US Veterans Administration (VA). It is free to use, and its total cost of ownership is much lower than proprietary closed source software.
Free licensing of VistA means more of your EHR budget can be devoted towards training you and your staff to use the system, and for support so that the system works to your specifications.
